Not protein, not Vitamin B12, not even Vitamin D. Here today I am discussing what I think is the least mentioned NUTRIENT DEFICIENCY: Near Infrared Light (NIR).
Wait, but light isn’t a nutrient?
According to Webster’s Dictionary, the definition for nutrient is: a substance or ingredient that promotes growth, provides energy, and maintains life.
Sunlight, specifically Near Infrared Light, is certainly VITAL for maintaining life and providing energy.
Sunlight represents the single largest external energy source to our body. Multiple times higher than what we get from food. We utilize this electromagnetic energy differently than the energy we consume from food.
Food provides electrons + protons + biomass
Light = photons
Sunlight is 49%-55% infrared light. NIR (650nm-1200nm) represents 70% of the total solar spectrum from a photochemistry viewpoint when considering photons/second.
A sunlight deficiency = a NIR deficiency, and because of our modern indoors lifestyle I would say that 99% of humans in 1st world countries are deficient in NIR light (and sunlight). Newer, “energy efficiency glass” blocks a fair amount of infrared light, especially in the near infrared band, so we are getting a distorted spectrum of sunlight whenever we are inside behind glass. This also applies to our windshields on our vehicles. This is contributing greatly to an NIR deficiency.

-Macular Degeneration/Aged Retinas
-Skin Aging, Wound, Injury Healing
Why is NIR light so beneficial for all of these issues?
It DRASTICALLY improves Mitochondrial function
The mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell.
They produce ATP, metabolic water, and are important signaling molecules.
NIR improves mitochondrial function by:
Upregulating the function of Cytochrome C Oxidase (Complex IV)
Stimulating Melatonin Production
Resulting in:
Increased ATP production
Reduced oxidative stress
Cytochrome C Oxidase (COX), the 4th respiratory protein in the ETC, determines the rate of oxygen consumption in the mitochondria and thus the rate of ATP synthesis
Near Infrared Light (and red light) upregulates COX and thus upregulates ATP production in the mitochondria. It has been recently hypothesized and researched that NIR light stimulates melatonin synthesis IN the mitochondria for internal use. This is a profound discovery because melatonin can now be thought of as the key composer to mitochondria homeostasis...
Melatonin is THE MASTER antioxidant, with one molecule able to scavenge up to 10 free radicals through a cascading mechanism. That means that melatonin can donate an electron to combat a free radical, then its oxidized state can ALSO donate an electron to combat a free radical, then that molecule’s oxidized state can ALSO donate an electron to combat a free radical…up to 4X cascade from one original melatonin molecule. This mitigates oxidative stress far more effectively than ANY dietary antioxidant you could take as a supplement. Melatonin is the composer of mitochondrial dynamics, and we need NIR light to stimulate its synthesis. Check out my article on melatonin if you want to learn more.
MITOCHONDRIAL WATER
The mitochondria is way more than just a producer of ATP. Just as important is the metabolic water it produce. This water is imperative for cellular communication, protection from toxins, semiconduction, electron + proton transport, and more.
NIR light supercharges structured water
Gerald Pollack has shown that the Exclusion Zone (EZ) of structured (aka 4th phase) water is largest when irradiated with NIR light. 3X expansion in size. EZ excludes anything the size of a proton or larger when properly charged
NIR light is so effective at influencing our biology because it has a very deep penetration ability. It readily goes 5-10mm (0.5-1cm) deep and at the right power densities has been shown to have a small % going as deep as 5cm.
This depth allows it to interact deep with the cells, mitochondria, and water in nearly every area of our body.
What happens when sunlight isn’t present like at night? Well our mitochondria are emitting infrared light as well (especially in winter) that can help stabilize water dynamics, but it will still be significantly weaker than during the day because the sun provides far higher power density.
PROTECTS AGAINST SUN DAMAGE
Everyone knows that the sun causes skin damage right? Then how come NIR light (50% of sunlight) has been shown to be extremely protective and restorative for skin health?
Morning sun (rich in NIR/absent of UV) pre-conditions your body for mid day UV exposure. If you get sufficient morning and early evening sun daily, you won't burn and won't wrinkle like someone who just goes out mid day 2X per week
Stop blaming the sun for poor lifestyle habits.

My thoughts on NIR panels?
I think they are fantastic, especially in winter/cloudy weather areas, but you need to know how to use them.
Only use when NIR would be present from the sun (dark out = no)
Understand that progressive overload matters (if you never get sun, start slow & build up)
99% of us are deficient in NIR light from indoor living. If you can't get outside enough, panels are a great option.
I like to use EMR-tek panels in Winter in Wyoming.
