Melanin. We all know and love melanin as the pigment that defines our skin color, eye color, hair color and race. Melanin is touted as your “natural skin protectant”. However, most mainstream health practitioners and researchers have NO CLUE that melanin is actually one of the most important molecules in the body. This is due to its ability to convert energy from sunlight into usable energy needed to drive our body's biochemical reactions. Yes, human photosynthesis is real. It is not the same as plant photosynthesis but humans have the ability to capture energy from sunlight and use it to power our biology because of biological semi-conduction. The best biological semi-conductor? Melanin
1) Functions of Melanin
• Antioxidant/free radical scavenger
• Skin Protectant
• Light & Energy Transducer
• Heavy Metal Binder
• Absorb & Convert Light Energy (EMR) into Chemical Energy
• Ability to Dissociate Water & Produce Energy
• Biological Semiconductor
Melanin is far more than just a skin protectant, which is what centralized health will tell you. They will also tell you that the sun is bad for you and that ATP is the true and tested "energy currency" of our biology. I'm here to tell you otherwise.
2) TYPES OF MELANIN
Humans have 3 types of melanin
Eumelanin (black/brown)
Pheomelanin (red/yellow)
Neuromelanin (brain)
In terms of their function, all 3 types of these perform similar tasks with a slightly different structure. Neuromelanin is the most unique & unknown melanin and its degradation has been linked to the root cause of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s + overall brain aging. When you think of melanin as one of the main energy sources of the brain, this makes a lot of sense. Deficient energy = deficient function.
As a mixture of eumelanin and pheomelanin, neuromelanin is the only melanin pigment that is not formed in melanocytes but in catecholaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra.
3) MELANIN SYNTHESIS
The melanin producing pathway requires amino acid Tyrosine to kick start the process.
Tyrosinase converts Tyrosine to L-DOPA, which is why many "skin lightening" skincare products include Tyrosinase inhibitors. The production of melanin is regulated by α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), which is produced from proopiomelanocortin (POMC)
POMC expression in the skin is increased by exposure to UV light. Beta-Endorphins are also a downstream product of POMC expression, meaning our biology is hardwired to be addicted to sun exposure via reward circuitry. Beta-endorphins also provide mild pain & stress relief.
Why would biology make a reward circuit that programs us to want more sun exposure?
Because that is just how important it is for optimal function. Without the sun and without our form of human photosynthesis, we would have dysfunctional biology almost immediately.
4) MELANIN is the MASTER ENERGY MOLECULE
Melanin produces energy by:
Absorbing photonic energy from electromagnetic radiation
Uses that energy to break/dissociate the water molecule
Reforms H2O molecule
Produces 4 high energy electrons for each 2 molecules of H2O
Melanin is a biological semiconductor (or hybrid conductor) which means given the right environment or external energy stimulus it can conduct electricity. (Has been known since the 70s...). For melanin, it is important to by hydrated with water.
Researchers have discovered that melanin's electrical properties could make it the future of battery technology.
The benefits of using melanin in a battery:
Extremely strong cathode
Non-toxic
Highly durable
Rechargeable from light
Melanin absorbs photons from the ENTIRE electromagnetic radiation spectrum. This is the external energy stimuli needed. It absorbs a peak spectra in the UV range, but still can take in energy from lower energy EMR unlike other respiratory pigments such as Hemoglobin.
Plants used Chlorophyll to capture the energy of sunlight in order to perform photosynthesis. Hemoglobin is more similar to Chlorophyll in structure and its ability to dissociate H2O (but NOT REFORM it). The Iron & Mg centered porphyrin rings are semiconductors. Melanin is the next level up from Chlorophyll and Hemoglobin because it dissociates + reforms the water molecule. Below you can see the equation for the melanin dissociation + reformation of the water molecule.
It can do this by absorbing far more energy from light as it is darkest pigment in the universe. 1000x more efficient at dissociating H2O vs Chlorophyll
Melanin is located EVERYWHERE in our biology. The energy it captures and converts can supply what is needed for biochemical reactions & the high energy electrons can go directly to our mitochondria, which then generate more water & ATP via the ETC. ATP is not the energy currency
Modern research is finally starting to catch up, with folks connecting the dots of melanin being able to provide energy from EMR absorption . If the melanin in your body is not producing energy properly, chronic disease is inevitable
However, Dr. Arturo Solis Herrera has been preaching this for years. His lab and Human Photosynthesis Center discovered Melanin's ability to dissociate the water molecule
We interviewed him on my podcast Decentralized Radio, highly recommend you check it out for a deeper dive. On all major podcasting platforms.
5) HOW TO OPTIMIZE ENERGY PRODUCTION via MELANIN
Sufficient sunlight
Avoid environmental toxins (alcohol, glyphosate, EMFs, artificial light, heavy metals, etc.)
Eat nutrient dense diet
Prioritize circadian biology (sleep, seasonality, mitochondrial function)
Tyrosine + Copper
Tyrosinase (TYR) is the enzyme that catalyzes many reactions in melanin synthesis. TYR is a copper enzyme and TRP2 is a zinc enzyme. Sufficient copper/zinc + tyrosine via the diet is imperative.
Glyphosate also destroys our gut bugs ability to produce Tyrosine via disrupting the Shikimate pathway. Deeper dive/podcast on glyphosate coming soon with the world expert Dr. Stephanie Seneff.
Avoid Alcohol + EMFs
Dr. Herrera mentions that alcohol can disrupt melanin DOW for up to 2 weeks! Even a single glass can impair Melanin’s ability to produce energy quite significantly.
Melanin can also buffer against nnEMFs since it absorbs the entire EMR spectrum, but it is a buffer only & not ideal for optimal functions. It was designed to absorb sunlight and not radio frequencies. If you haven’t read my intro article on EMFs yet, i highly recommend checking it out.
SUMMARY
Human Photosynthesis is real.
We are made of biological semiconductors that can transform light energy into usable energy for our biochemistry.
Melanin is the master at this, because it is the darkest pigment, can absorb the most light & thus is the strongest conductor. There is a reason that those with melanin-rich skin can have up to 80% less mitochondria compared to fair skinned folk. They are designed to harvest a higher % of energy from light compared to food.
Remember as well that mitochondria are the bodies internal heat source. Caucasians are better at uncoupling their mitochondrial respiratory proteins because they adapted to cold environments. That is why cold induces mitochondrial biogenesis. Embracing mitochondrial heritage and skin type is imperative.

6) How to optimize melanin - sniff a field of violets in the spring -> really phenomenal. Goal being to inhale more beta-ionone, a carotenoid, as it stimulates production of melanin in our melanocytes.
https://www.mdpi.com/1420-3049/25/24/5822 -- goes well with your seasonality topic.
Adequate protein is also needed. Melanin is protein based on amino acid tyrosine.
